Chile

Chilean viticulture is French-oriented. The grape plantings are a good reflection of this. There is extensive experimentation with many varieties, but the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the white Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate the landscape. Carmenère also produces exceptional wines. This red variety is related to Merlot. Originally, like Merlot, it comes from the Bordeaux region, but it is rarely found there anymore.

Due to the natural borders of mountains, ice, and ocean, phylloxera and other pests have not been able to reach the country. This makes it attractive for winemakers to work without chemical pesticides, and organic grape cultivation in Chile has a bright future.

Most wine regions are located south of the capital Santiago. The names of these wine regions all end in 'Valley', and are often named after the main river that flows through the respective area. Chile currently has fourteen wine-growing regions. In recent years, many new and promising wine regions have emerged. This indicates how rapidly Chilean viticulture is developing.
