Romania
Romania is much larger than its neighbor Bulgaria and also borders Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Moldova. Part of Moldova is located on Romanian territory (Romanian Moldova). To the east lies the Black Sea.
It is a major wine country when it comes to quantities: there are over 200,000 hectares of vineyards, and it produces over 3 million hectoliters of wine. This makes it the sixth-largest country in Europe. Romania produces more than, for example, Bulgaria or Austria. However, fewer Romanian wines enter the Western European market than Bulgarian or Austrian wines. This is because the Romanian wine industry has always focused more on the East, especially Russia. After the fall of communism, this is slowly changing, and winemakers and winegrowers are also investing in quality.
In general, the white wines are better than the reds. The best dry white wines come from the Tîrnave region in Transylvania. At Cotnari, in Romanian Moldova, winemakers produce noble sweet wines that are worth trying. In the southeast, Pinot noir is mainly grown, along with some other international varieties.
