Tasting Notes Volcanes Tectonia Grenache/Petite Sirah/Mourvèdre 

Complex, expressive nose with notes of ripe black cherries, blackberries and strawberry, a hint of smoke, tobacco, minerals, candied fruit, toast, menthol and liquorice. The taste is velvety with lively but ripe tannins, a firm body, with a very long finish in which cassis predominates. Deep red colour.

Wine & Food 

Volcanes Tectonia Grenache/Petite Sirah/Mourvèdre is delicious with grilled meats, red meats, lamb, game and pasta dishes, and mature cheeses. 

Other information

The grapes for this wine are blended separately: Grenache from Chacapoal from vineyards with basalt/andesite soils. Petite Sirah from Maipo from clay soils lying on intrusive rock. And Mourvèrdre from Maule from granite soils. The wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new. 

Bodega Volcanes is a project that started in 2009 and is part of the Grupo Vinos del Pacifico (GVP). A number of employees of this group came up with the idea of making a series of wines that came from vineyards with 100% volcanic soils.

The five-person team included winemaker María del Pilar Díaz, geologist Gonzalo Hendriguez and Terroir manager Agustín Aguerrea. They have selected three vineyards, spread throughout Chile, which they believe convey the ultimate expression of a volcanic soil to the wines.

In Rapel Valley, this is a vineyard with silt, clay and loam soil supplemented with coarser material such as andesite stones (an effusive rock). In Maule Valley, they have found a vineyard with a soil of (weathered) granite. In Malleco Valley, the vineyard is planted on a soil of "Tolhuaco", which consists of volcanic ash.

María Díaz strives to express the purity and minerality of the soils in the wines. She succeeds very well, especially because new wood is never excessively used during fermentation and maturation. The wines are all lively and rich and have more complexity in aroma and taste than comparable wines from the same region.
