Mezzacorona – wine from the heart of Trentino
Mezzacorona is one of the largest and most modern wine cooperatives in Italy and has its roots deep in Trentino, in northern Italy. Since 1904, winegrowers have been working together here to create wines that reflect the character of the alpine landscape. What started with 13 founders has grown into a cooperative of approximately 1,500 winegrowing families with around 2,500 hectares of vineyards.
The location is special. Trentino lies between the Dolomites and the Alps, with high mountains, deep valleys, crystal-clear rivers and lakes. The combination of sunny days, cool nights, and altitude ensures wines known for their freshness, elegance, and aromatic character.
More than 100 years of viticulture
The history of Mezzacorona begins in 1904, when 13 winegrowers decided to join forces. The cooperative model is still an important part of the company.
Currently, approximately 1,500 families work together within the cooperative. This allows knowledge, experience, and vineyards to be combined, while the winegrowers remain strongly connected to their own region.
This makes Mezzacorona a good example of how tradition and modern viticulture can go hand in hand.
Trentino – wine among the mountains
The vineyards of Mezzacorona are spread across Trentino, but the Piana Rotaliana is particularly important. This fertile plain lies between the Noce and Adige rivers and is surrounded by mountains.
The large difference between warm days and cool nights is ideal for viticulture. The grapes can ripen slowly while retaining their natural acids and aromas.
This partly explains why wines from Trentino often have a very different character than wines from the warmer south of Italy.
Teroldego – the 'gold' of Trentino
One of Mezzacorona's greatest specialties is Teroldego. This indigenous grape variety is grown almost exclusively in the Piana Rotaliana and is considered one of Trentino's most important grapes. The cultivation of Teroldego has been documented since the Middle Ages; sources even refer to the 13th century.
Teroldego generally offers dark fruit, spiciness, fresh acidity, and a beautiful structure. The grape can produce both accessible red wines and powerful, long-aged Riservas.
Mezzacorona itself calls Teroldego the 'Royal wine of Trentino'. In 1971, the grape was the first variety from Trentino to receive its own DOC: Teroldego Rotaliano DOC.
Also Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay
Although Teroldego is an important regional specialty, Mezzacorona naturally produces much more.
Pinot Grigio is an important part of the assortment and benefits from the cool alpine climate. This allows the wines to remain fresh and aromatic.
Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and several other grape varieties are also used in the portfolio. Mezzacorona therefore offers both fresh white wines, rosé, and characterful red wines.
Sustainability
According to Mezzacorona, sustainability has long been part of the company philosophy. This is not just about how the grapes are grown, but also about the cooperation between the winegrowers and how the wine is produced.
The cooperative model plays an important role in this: the 1,500 affiliated families share knowledge and work together for a sustainable future for viticulture in Trentino.
Fun fact
Teroldego is genetically related to Pinot Noir and Syrah. Research indicates a genetic relationship between Teroldego and these two well-known grape varieties. In addition, Teroldego is considered an ancestor of, among others, Lagrein and Marzemino.
I find that a much more interesting fact than just "Teroldego is a local grape". It immediately provides a surprising link with two grapes your customers probably do know.
