Tasting Note Feudo Arancio Nerello Mascalese

An elegant and characterful red wine from Sicily, made from 100% Nerello Mascalese. The nose is dominated by ripe cherries, raspberries and violets, complemented by subtle notes of white pepper and spices.

The palate is juicy and lively, with red fruit, a nice fresh acidity and soft, ripe tannins. The wine has a medium body and a refined, spicy finish. The combination of fruit, freshness and structure makes it accessible, but certainly not simple.

Food Pairing

Feudo Arancio Nerello Mascalese is a versatile red wine that pairs excellently with grilled fish, poultry, veal, pasta with tomato sauce and light meat dishes. It also makes for a lovely combination with antipasti and semi-hard cheeses.

Nerello Mascalese is one of the most important indigenous grape varieties of Sicily and is best known from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. With this wine, Feudo Arancio creates a Sicilian version that presents the grape in an accessible and fruity way.

The grapes are harvested and selected by hand. After destemming, the grapes are first cooled for a cold maceration of 3 to 4 days at 10–12 °C. This is followed by alcoholic fermentation at approximately 22–24 °C for 8–10 days.

This combination is intended to preserve as many aromas from the grape as possible while simultaneously obtaining soft tannins and structure. After fermentation, the wine then matures in French oak barriques.

Nerello Mascalese is often seen as one of the finest red grapes of Sicily. On the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, the grape can produce particularly elegant wines that are sometimes surprisingly reminiscent of Pinot Noir in style.
