G.D. Vajra – Winery from Piedmont

G.D. Vajra is a unique winery from Barolo, in the heart of Piedmont. The family business was built by Aldo and Milena Vaira and is known for wines where tradition, terroir, and innovation go hand in hand. The winery is located in Vergne, about three kilometers from the center of Barolo.

What makes Vajra special is the great diversity of grapes and wine styles. Of course, Nebbiolo and Barolo play an important role, but the assortment also includes Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Riesling, Pinot Nero, Moscato, and even the extraordinary Clare J.C. With this, Vajra shows that Piedmont has much more to offer than just Barolo.

From maverick pioneer to renowned winery

The story of Vajra begins with Aldo Vaira, who became fascinated by the wine world of Barolo at a young age. In 1971, while still a student, he was among the early pioneers who applied organic viticulture in Piedmont. This philosophy still forms an important part of the company.

The family works with great attention to the soil, biodiversity, and the natural ecosystem around the vineyards. The vineyards are covered with grass and spontaneous vegetation, among other things, to protect the soil. Today, the vineyards are sustainably and organically certified.

High-altitude vineyards

Another characteristic of Vajra is its high-altitude vineyards. Some plots are located at an altitude of approximately 380 to 480 meters. The altitude provides cooling and large differences between day and night temperatures, which helps to preserve freshness and aromas in the grapes.

Vajra also pays a lot of attention to the different terroirs within the Langhe. Soil, altitude, location, and exposure are meticulously considered when making the wines.

More than just Barolo

Vajra boasts an impressive assortment. In addition to various Barolos, including Albe, Coste di Rose, Ravera, and Bricco delle Viole, the house also produces Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, Freisa, Riesling, Pinot Nero, and Moscato d'Asti, among others.

A wine like the Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo Claré J.C., for example, shows a completely different, fresh and playful side of Nebbiolo. The Vajra Moscato d'Asti, in turn, shows how versatile Piedmont can be.

Tradition and experimentation

Vajra is not only focused on preserving traditions. The winery also likes to experiment.

A beautiful example is the Claré J.C., which draws on historical descriptions of Nebbiolo. With this, Vajra tries to approach a style of Nebbiolo that differs greatly from the powerful Barolos we know today.

This fits perfectly with the philosophy of the house: using tradition as inspiration, but not as a limitation.

The Vaira family

G.D. Vajra is emphatically a family business. In addition to Aldo and Milena, the next generation of Vaira is now also involved in the winery. On its own website, Vajra explicitly presents the company as a collaboration of different generations.
