Tasting Note Vajra Barbera d'Alba
Vajra's Barbera surprises with an expressive aroma of red and dark fruits, enriched with sweet spices, herbs, anise, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, juicy strawberries and cherries return, subtly supported by a touch of white pepper. An elegant, complex wine with beautiful minerality and a refined structure.
Wine & Food
Vajra Barbera d'Alba pairs well with pasta dishes, an excellent match for Piedmontese tagliolini with white truffle and truffle butter, or pasta with wild mushrooms.
Additional Information
In Piedmont, Barbera is often made in a light, fruity style: accessible and easy to drink. But according to the family of the Vajra winery, this does not do justice to the grape. They opt for careful and slow vinification, with a long maceration period to create more depth and complexity. The grapes come from various plots, some of which were planted more than fifty years ago. The vineyards are cultivated completely organically, and each plot is vinified separately to preserve its unique character.
After a fermentation period of about twenty days, the grapes are pressed. The wine then matures for another twelve to fourteen months in stainless steel tanks. During fermentation, the must is regularly pumped over the skins to extract as much color, aromas, and structure from the grapes as possible. Thanks to aging in stainless steel, the wine retains its lively freshness and the pure, fruity character so typical of the Barbera grape.
Aldo Vajra has always been a bit rebellious. And rightly so, because this trait has led to this magnificent winery with its authentic wines. The story begins when Aldo, at fifteen, is picked up by his father during a demonstration in Turin and sent to his grandparents' farm. That summer, Aldo spends a lot of time in the vineyards, where his interest in winemaking is sparked. He joins Suole e Salute, an organization for organic wines in Italy. Already at the age of 18, he makes his first organic wines in Piedmont.
