Tarani

Tarani is a brand of Vinovalie, a cooperative of winegrowers in Southwest France. Vinovalie was formed in 2006 from the merger of four cooperatives and now unites approximately 400 winegrowers. The organization works with vineyards in Gaillac, Fronton, and Cahors, among others.

But the most interesting story lies in the name Tarani.

According to Vinovalie, Tarani was a Gallic potter who worked in Montans, near Gaillac, in the 1st century AD. Archaeologists found amphorae there with the inscription "Tarani." This discovery indicates that an organized wine trade already existed in this area during Roman times.

Vinovalie deliberately uses this history for the brand. The nice thing is that Tarani itself has now existed as a wine brand for 20 years. In 2026, Vinovalie will celebrate Tarani's 20th anniversary, while the story behind the name dates back more than 2,000 years.

Fun fact: the name Tarani is over 2,000 years old. Archaeologists found Roman amphorae with the name Tarani on them near Montans, close to Gaillac. The wine brand Tarani itself has now been around for 20 years.
