Poderi Boscarelli – winery from Montepulciano

Poderi Boscarelli is a characterful family business from Cervognano, near Montepulciano in Tuscany. The winery was founded in 1962 by Egidio Corradi, who bought two small, partly abandoned farms with the ambition of making a wine that would express the quality and character of Montepulciano.

In the following years, his daughter Paola Corradi and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari took the project further. They planted the first specialized vineyards and built the first wine cellar. The third generation, Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari, are now at the helm and the family business continues.

Everything revolves around Vino Nobile

Approximately 80% of Boscarelli's production consists of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. According to the winery, about 150,000 bottles are produced annually, divided into different cuvées and aging styles.

Such as:

  • Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva
  • Sotto Casa Vino Nobile Riserva
  • Costa Grande Vino Nobile
  • Il Nocio Vino Nobile

The latter is particularly interesting: Il Nocio comes from one specific vineyard and is among Boscarelli's most prestigious wines.

Cervognano: the terroir

The vineyards are located around 300 meters above sea level on the eastern slopes of Montepulciano. Cervognano benefits from good thermal ventilation, creating a microclimate that is particularly suitable for quality viticulture.

The soils are of alluvial origin, rich in sand and stones and with good drainage. Sangiovese is by far the most important grape here, representing approximately 80% of the vineyards. In addition, Colorino, Canaiolo, Mammolo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted, among others.

Sangiovese is central

Boscarelli has a very specific vision for Sangiovese. The family works with various clonal selections, carefully looking at differences in soil, location and microclimate.

This goes quite far: according to Boscarelli, the different selections are kept separate during harvesting and vinification. This results in more than 30 different Sangiovese cuvées per harvest, which are only blended into the final wines just before bottling.

I think that's a wonderful piece of information for your page, because it explains why Boscarelli is so strongly focused on terroir and elegance.

A true family business

The family story is an important part of Boscarelli.

Paola De Ferrari Corradi played a crucial role in continuing the business after her husband died unexpectedly in 1983. Her sons Luca and Nicolò were still teenagers then, but eventually both chose to join the family business. Luca mainly focuses on wine and vineyard, while Nicolò played an important role in the development and expansion of the vineyards and the wine cellar.

Great distinctions

Boscarelli has received considerable recognition over the years.

A nice recent one is the Costa Grande 2021, which ended up at number 9 in the James Suckling Top 100 Wines of Italy 2025.

And perhaps even more impressive: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 2016 was included in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2022 and finished in 31st place.

Fun fact

Fun fact: Boscarelli started with just two small, partly abandoned farms that Egidio Corradi bought in 1962. From that modest start grew a family business that now manages approximately 30 hectares of vineyards and produces about 150,000 bottles annually.
