Tasting Notes Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG
An elegant and characterful Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG from Tuscany. The aroma reveals ripe cherries, red and dark fruits, spices, and subtle earthy notes. As the wine opens up, nuances of leather, liquorice, and a light balsamic spiciness can also be discovered.
On the palate, the wine is beautifully structured, with lively acidity, refined tannins, and great length. The ripe cherry fruit is complemented by spicy and earthy notes. A classic Tuscan red wine with power, but above all, elegance and balance.
Wine & Food
Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG is a wonderful accompaniment to beef, game, lamb, stews, and mushrooms. Also delicious with Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragu, ossobuco, or dishes with truffles.
Additional Information
The wine comes from Cervognano, an area within Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Here, the Boscarelli winery has its vineyards and has been making wines for generations that highlight the typical characteristics of Sangiovese. The Riserva falls under the DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, the highest Italian quality classification.
The base of this wine is Sangiovese, locally also known as Prugnolo Gentile. Depending on the vintage and source used, a small proportion of Colorino is also mentioned.
The wine undergoes a longer maturation than the regular Vino Nobile, which refines the tannins and develops more complexity and depth in the wine.
The hand-picked grapes are processed separately and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels. Fermentation lasts approximately 10 days at 28–30 °C, followed by a few extra days of maceration on the skins. After that, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for 28 to 32 months in French and Slavonian oak barrels. Finally, the wine undergoes several months of bottle aging before being released to the market.

Fun Fact
Boscarelli temporarily stopped making this Riserva after the 1992 harvest. The family decided to replant the vineyards with selected plant material first. The Riserva only returned in 2010, when the new vines were almost twenty years old.
