Additional Information
The Costa Grande comes from Cervognano near Montepulciano, in the Val di Chiana. The vineyards are located on rolling hills and benefit from a moderate microclimate with cooling air currents. The soil consists, among other things, of clay and sand, which contributes to the combination of structure and elegance.
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed, and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in small wooden barrels, at approximately 28–30 °C. During fermentation, the cap is regularly plunged and pumped over. After fermentation, there is another approximately 5 to 8 days of skin contact.
The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation, followed by a remarkably long aging period. The Costa Grande first matures for about a year in 5-hectoliter tonneaux, after which it is transferred to larger oak barrels of about 25 hectoliters. It remains there for another year. Subsequently, the wine rests for a few months in concrete tanks and then approximately 6 to 12 months of bottle aging before it is released to the market.
This is quite remarkable for a Vino Nobile that is not a Riserva and explains why this wine can develop considerable complexity. Discover more wines from the Tuscan winery Boscarelli.

Fun Fact
Costa Grande is not a Riserva, but it does undergo a remarkably long aging process. The wine spends about two years in wood, followed by months in concrete tanks and then a significant period in the bottle. With this, Boscarelli clearly takes its time to allow the wine to settle before it is sold.
