Lunaria – biodynamic wines from Abruzzo

Lunaria is a special wine collection from BIO Cantina Sociale Orsogna, a cooperative wine producer from Orsogna in Abruzzo, central Italy. The collection is entirely dedicated to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Lunaria wines are Demeter-certified and are made with spontaneous fermentation.

The history of Lunaria began in 2003, when a number of winemakers from Cantina Sociale Orsogna, who were already working organically, decided to take the step towards biodynamic agriculture. The protection of the landscape, biodiversity, and agricultural traditions of Abruzzo were central to this.

BIO Cantina Sociale Orsogna

The cooperative was founded in 1964 by 35 winemakers. Approximately 450 winemakers are now affiliated with the cooperative. Many of these companies are small family businesses, where knowledge and traditions are passed down from generation to generation.

Lunaria is therefore a good example of how a cooperative can combine traditional agricultural knowledge with a modern vision of organic and biodynamic viticulture.

Biodynamic viticulture

At Lunaria, organic viticulture goes one step further. The vineyards are managed according to biodynamic principles and the wines are Demeter-certified. Biodiversity also plays an important role in the producer's philosophy.

The grapes are harvested by hand and the vineyards are not irrigated. Much attention is paid to the natural development of the soil and the ecosystem around the vines.

An important part of winemaking is spontaneous fermentation. This involves using the natural yeasts present on the grapes instead of specially selected commercial yeast cultures.

Wines from Lunaria

Within the Lunaria collection, various Italian grape varieties are used. For example, the winery produces wines from Montepulciano, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Primitivo, among others.

A good example is the Lunaria Pettirosce Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, made from 100% Montepulciano. This rosé is organically and biodynamically certified and is spontaneously fermented.

The Lunaria Charisma Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is also special: this wine is unfiltered and is made from 100% Trebbiano d'Abruzzo.

Abruzzo: between the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella

The Lunaria vineyards are located around Orsogna, at an altitude of approximately 440 meters. The vineyards are only about 16 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and 16 kilometers from the Maiella mountains.

This special location creates an interesting microclimate with both Mediterranean and mountain influences. The altitude and cooling also help to preserve the freshness of the grapes.

Fun fact

An orange thread is hand-tied around the neck of every Lunaria bottle.

This is not just decoration. According to the producer, the orange thread is the symbol of biodynamic agriculture and at the same time forms a traditional farmer's seal that replaces the capsule. Every bottle is literally finished by hand.
