Oddbird – Swedish pioneer in non-alcoholic wine
Oddbird is a Swedish winery founded in 2013 by Moa Gürbüzer, a former social worker and family therapist. After more than twenty years of working with families affected by alcohol-related problems, she wanted to change the conversation about alcohol. Her idea: wine without alcohol should not be seen as an alternative to wine, but as a fully-fledged choice.
Her vision can be neatly summarized by the question: do you want your wine with or without alcohol? As natural as asking if someone wants coffee with or without milk. From this idea, Oddbird was born.
🇸🇪 Swedish brand, European wines
Although Oddbird started in Sweden, the grapes do not come from Sweden. The winery collaborates with winemakers in various European wine regions, including France, Italy, and Spain. As a result, the origin and grapes vary considerably per wine.
First make wine, then remove alcohol
What sets Oddbird apart from many simple non-alcoholic alternatives is that the company first makes and ages the wine in a traditional way. Some wines mature for up to twelve months before the alcohol is removed. Only when the wine has developed its desired character is the alcohol carefully removed.
Oddbird uses techniques that try to preserve as much aroma, structure, freshness, and complexity of the original wine as possible.
Much attention to research
Oddbird has its own research center in Alsace, where they work on the further development of non-alcoholic wine. The research focuses, among other things, on the influence of grape varieties, fermentation, aging, and the removal of alcohol on aroma, taste, texture, and balance.
Oddbird works with winemakers, oenologists, universities, and sensory experts. The goal is to bring non-alcoholic wine closer to the quality and complexity of traditional wine.
Natural approach
Oddbird also emphasizes the importance of responsible agriculture, healthy soils, and vineyard care. The winery collaborates with winegrowers who pay attention to the natural ecosystem and deliberately chooses grapes from renowned European wine regions.
A family business
The story of Oddbird is now continued by Moa Gürbüzer and her son Mehmet Gürbüzer, who is involved as CEO in the further international growth of the company. Oddbird is now active in more than twenty markets worldwide.
More than just non-alcoholic
Oddbird doesn't simply make "wine without alcohol." The brand tries to preserve various classic wine styles and grape varieties in a non-alcoholic form.
