Misty Cove – distinctive wines from Marlborough
Misty Cove is a New Zealand winery from Marlborough, one of New Zealand's most famous wine regions. The winery was founded in 2008 and focuses on distinctive, fruit-driven wines that showcase the typical Marlborough character well.
Marlborough is located on the northeast side of the South Island and is best known for its Sauvignon Blanc. The sunny climate, cool nights, and the cooling influences of the surrounding sea ensure that grapes ripen slowly while retaining their fresh acidity and aromatic character.
Wines from Marlborough
Misty Cove works with grapes from various vineyards within Marlborough, including the Wairau Valley and Waihopai Valley. By combining grapes from different locations, the winery can create different nuances and styles.
Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, forms an important part of the range. The style is recognisably New Zealand: aromatic, fresh, and juicy, with notes of passionfruit, citrus, green apple, and gooseberry.
But Misty Cove makes more than just Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also part of their portfolio.
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Misty Cove's Sauvignon Blanc clearly demonstrates why Marlborough has built such a good reputation worldwide. The combination of plenty of sun during the day and cool nights results in a wine with intense aromas and vibrant acidity.
This makes the wines not only delicious as an aperitif but also particularly suitable with fish, shellfish, sushi, salads, and goat cheese.
The Estate Sauvignon Blanc has also received several awards in recent years. For example, the 2024 vintage received gold and a Trophy at the Aotearoa Regional Wine Competition and Double Gold at the New Zealand International Wine Show.
Misty Cove Sauvignon Blanc Blush
A special wine in the range is the Estate Sauvignon Blanc Blush. This wine is a combination of mainly Sauvignon Blanc with a small percentage of Pinot Noir.
This gives the wine a light blush colour, while in terms of freshness and character, it is clearly closer to Sauvignon Blanc than to a classic rosé.
This makes it a fun and surprising summer wine: fresh like Sauvignon Blanc, but with a subtle pink appearance.
Sustainable viticulture and Marlborough
Viticulture in Marlborough strongly revolves around utilising the natural climate. The cool nights are important for preserving acidity and aromas, while the sunny days ensure sufficient ripeness.
The different vineyard locations within Marlborough also give winemakers the opportunity to combine grapes with different characteristics.
Fun fact
The name Misty Cove refers to the misty bays of the Marlborough Sounds. The Marlborough Sounds are not far from the wine region and are one of the characteristic landscapes of the northeast of the South Island.
