Ca'Bolani – winery from Friuli
Ca'Bolani is a leading winery from Aquileia in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the northeast of Italy. The estate is located in the heart of the Aquileia DOC, a historic wine region known for its vineyards and wines since Roman times. Even Pliny the Elder wrote about the quality of the wines from Aquileia.
The estate was acquired in 1970 by the Zonin family, who started an extensive renovation program with the aim of further developing the local wine culture and the unique characteristics of the area. Ca'Bolani now boasts no less than 890 hectares, of which approximately 570 hectares are vineyards. The vineyard area consists of about 90 different parcels, which are harvested and vinified separately.
Wines from Aquileia
The location of Ca'Bolani is special. The vineyards lie between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The sea breeze provides cooling in the summer, while the significant temperature differences between day and night help preserve the fresh acidity and aromas of the grapes. This allows the grapes to ripen optimally without the wines losing their freshness.
Ca'Bolani works with both indigenous grape varieties from Friuli and international varieties. The assortment includes Friulano, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Traminer Aromatico, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery also produces various sparkling wines.
A good example of the attention to terroir is Ca'Bolani's Sauvignon Blanc. The winery conducted years of research into a special local clone of Sauvignon Blanc that was discovered in an old vineyard. These old vines eventually formed the basis for new plantings on the estate.
Sustainability
Sustainability plays an important role at Ca'Bolani. The winery focuses, among other things, on protecting nature, preserving local wine culture, and applying techniques that contribute to more sustainable viticulture. The guiding principle is that the land is not only owned but also passed on to future generations.
Fun fact
Ca'Bolani has a 'Garden of Vines' with more than ten different grape varieties. But perhaps the most fun fact is that Aquileia was an important wine city over 2,000 years ago. The Romans were already extensively involved in wine there, and Pliny the Elder described the wines from this area as particularly valuable.
