Tasting Note Ca'Bolani Refosco Friuli Aquileia
Bouquet of cherry jam with a hint of herbs and resin. The powerful taste is in delightful contrast with the invigorating fruity freshness, with soft tannins beautifully framing the long finish. Refosco is an indigenous grape variety here with unique aromatic properties that you won't find in any other grape. Don't drink it too warm. On warm days, a few hours in the refrigerator is recommended. Dark red with a purple hue.
Wine & Food
This Ca'Bolani Refosco is ideal with dishes from Northern Italian cuisine. Such as a plate of San Daniele ham, a Polenta Concia alla Valdostana... or beef carpaccio, of course.
Additional information
The Friuli wine region is located in the northeast of Italy. The climate is influenced by a mix of air currents from the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. About 100 km east of Venice, around the ancient Roman town of Aquileia, lies the birthplace of this wine, where the terroir largely consists of sand, clay, and pebbles. The winery's namesake is the noble Bolani family, who sold the property in 1970 to the Zonin family, who further built its reputation.
Refosco is an indigenous grape variety here with unique aromatic properties that you won't find in any other grape. There are at least four different types, with Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (translation: Refosco with the red stem) being attributed the highest quality. After destemming and crushing, the must undergoes maceration and fermentation for 8 to 12 days with optimal extraction of color, aroma, and flavor compounds. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation takes place, after which the wine ages for some time in oak barrels before bottling.
This Bolani Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a magnificent wine from Friuli in northeast Italy. There's a good chance you've never heard of the Refosco dal Peduncolo grape variety. Yet, this grape is very famous in Friuli and the pride of the Ca’ Bolani winery. I understand why, because I was immediately enthusiastic with the very first sip. Delicious wine!
Fun fact
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso literally means "Refosco with the red stem." The grape owes its name to the strikingly red-colored stems of the grape bunches. A true Friulian specialty!
