Tasting Notes Esporão Monte Velho Reserva White
The wine shows a crystal-clear, pale straw-yellow color with golden reflections. The nose opens richly with intense aromas of lemon peel, fresh peach, and white berries, subtly supported by spices and floral notes, creating a complex and alluring whole. On the palate, the wine is elegant and balanced: fresh acidity, with a firm body and a soft creaminess from aging on fine lees.
Wine & Food
Esporão Monte Velho Reserva White pairs excellently with refined seafood (such as scallops or prawns), grilled fish (sea bass, gilt-head bream), light white meat dishes (chicken with lemon), creamy salads or sushi and sashimi. It also works well as an aperitif or with mild cheeses.
Additional Information
In the heart of subtropical sunny Alentejo in the south of Portugal lies the iconic winery Herdade do Esporão, known for sustainable quality and accessible elegance. The Monte Velho Reserva White is the more luxurious sibling of the popular Monte Velho White: more refined thanks to barrique influences, without losing the freshness and charm of its entry-level version.
The Alentejo region is characterized by a summer of very hot days with a strong cooling at night, followed by a winter that is extremely cold for Portugal. These ingredients, combined with volcanic soil and local grape varieties, form the basis of very original wines. The history of the Esporão winery dates back to the Bronze Age. During the Roman occupation, the wines were already exported throughout the Roman Empire.
The grapes are machine-harvested, chilled after picking, and then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, for approximately 20% in used American and French oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine ages for six months on fine lees, which provides extra texture and complexity.
