Tasting Notes Zuccardi Polígonos Altamira Malbec
An elegant and distinctive Malbec from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley. The fresh, aromatic character is immediately noticeable on the nose, with notes of red cherries, raspberries, and plums, complemented by violets, fresh herbs, and a subtle spiciness. As the wine opens up, nuances of graphite and wet stone also emerge.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and concentrated, yet remarkably fresh. The lively acidity gives the wine tension, while the fine but firm tannins provide structure. The fruit remains beautifully upfront: redcurrant, cherry, and plum are complemented by notes of herbs, pepper, and a slightly mineral, chalky impression.
Wine & Food
Zuccardi Polígonos Paraje Altamira Malbec is delicious with grilled beef, lamb, sirloin, and Argentine steak. Due to its fresh acidity and fine tannins, it also pairs surprisingly well with roasted vegetables, mushrooms, spicy stews, and empanadas.
Additional Information
The name Polígonos refers to the philosophy behind this series. Zuccardi aims with these wines not only to showcase the grape but especially the identity of a specific place. The different vineyards are, as it were, separate "polygons" on the map of the Uco Valley, each with its own climate, soil, and history.
Gualtallary is located at the foot of the Andes and has a high-altitude, dry climate. During the day, there is plenty of sunshine, while the nights cool down significantly. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their natural acidity.
The soil here is at least as interesting. Under a layer of sand, there are gravel, caliche, and a lot of calcareous material. Precisely these calcareous soils contribute to the mineral, energetic style of this Malbec.
The wine is made with indigenous yeasts and fermented in concrete tanks. After that, it also ages in concrete and used, untoasted 500-liter French oak barrels. This limits the influence of wood, allowing the grape, soil, and origin to speak.
At the end of the 19th century, the Zuccardi family emigrated from Italy to Argentina. In the 1950s, Alberto V. Zuccardi founded an irrigation company, a logical step in a country where agriculture without irrigation is hardly possible. To demonstrate the success of his system, he planted his first vineyards in Maipú in 1963, followed by an expansion near Mendoza.
Since 1985, his son José Alberto Zuccardi has led the family business, which is now renowned worldwide for its quality. Zuccardi has been named Best Vineyard in South America multiple times, and their wines consistently achieve top ratings, with even scores of 100 points Parker.

Fun fact
With the Polígonos series, Zuccardi is essentially creating a kind of terroir comparison. The Malbec from Altamira, Gualtallary, and San Pablo are made in a similar way, so that primarily the difference in soil, altitude, and climate comes to the fore in the glass.
