The vineyards of Utiel Requena are located inland from the larger production area near the east coast in Valencia.

The responsible winery, Vicente Gandia, encourages its winemakers to produce adventurous and unusual wines like this, in addition to traditional varieties. The Valencian Gandia family has been active in wine trade throughout Europe since 1885. It was only in the 1960s that they started bottling their own wine. They were the first winery in the wider Valencia region. Today, they produce wine in almost all of Spain, from Rioja, Rueda, Rias Baixas, Ribera del Duero to Priorat.
