Tasting Note Kaiken Ultra Malbec Magnum
This Ultra Malbec from Kaiken is rich in aromas of ripe plums, blackcurrants, and a hint of violets, combined with subtle notes of chocolate and coffee from aging in oak barrels. The palate is powerful and full-bodied, with a complex structure of ripe tannins that ensure a smooth and long finish.
Food Pairing
Kaiken Ultra Malbec pairs excellently with grilled red meat, such as a juicy steak or lamb chops from the Big Green Egg, but also combines well with stews and rich cheeses.
Additional Information
The symbol of Kaiken Wines is a species of goose called the Cauquén (the Upland Goose), which is common in Patagonia and regularly crosses between Argentina and Chile. Aurelio Montes frequently took the same flight and saw the geese flying back and forth. During one of these flights, the name of the winery was born. How fitting!
Kaiken Wines was founded in 2001 by Aurelio Montes Sr., one of Chile's most famous winemakers, as he was at the forefront of the major development of Chilean viticulture. He was one of the first—he himself convincingly claims the first—to give the necessary attention to the concept of terroir and to start planting vineyards on steep slopes.
The Malbec is indisputably the king of grapes in Argentina. The Kaiken Ultra Malbec comes from 3 different vineyards in the Uco Valley. All have diverse soil types and a characteristic top layer of river stones. The variation in sun, location, and soil type gives a distinctive character and a uniquely complex wine with a beautiful structure and a long finale. This Ultra Malbec was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 1/3 of which were new oak and 2/3 used oak. The wine has aromas of ripe red fruit, blackberries, spice, and tobacco. The taste is full, dark, and you can taste concentrated ripe fruit with a velvety finish. What a vibrant wine and what power!
