The grape variety used for this wine is a slightly lesser-known variety from Puglia than the more widely planted Primitivo and Negroamaro grapes in Puglia. Nevertheless, very tasty wines are made from this grape, such as this one from Velarino. 

The Nero di Troia grape (also known as Uva di Troia) is an indigenous grape from northern Puglia, near Foggia, which is not widely found. The grape was formerly used exclusively for blending, until it was discovered that Nero di Troia could also stand alone. With the right attention during harvesting and the vinification process, it is a true gem. A versatile wine that can also be aged for years.

The name 'Puglia' is derived from the Roman 'a-pluvia,' meaning lack of rain. The vineyards are located on flat terrain where they are tormented by the hot sun.
