Tasting Notes Sauternes Le Tertre du Lys d’Or 0.375 cl
Dizzying aromas of candied fruit, white flowers, and a hint of honey. These are also reflected in the taste. Full, round, and an ultimate balance between sweetness and fresh acidity. A quality wine with great aging potential! Candied fruit and honey in the aroma. These impressions are naturally reflected in the taste, which is then soothing and harmonious. A class wine! Beautiful golden yellow color.
Wine & Food Pairing
This sweet and elegant jewel pairs divinely with orange desserts (sugars and acids), such as crêpes Suzette, or with lemon tart, meringue, and almond cake. It also effortlessly charms strong, salty cheeses like Roquefort and Bleu d’Auvergne. This Sauternes Le Tertre du Lys d’Or pairs well with: orange desserts, pineapple, mango, lemon tart, almond cake, and blue cheeses.
Additional Information
When you talk about a dessert wine, you're talking about the Sauternes region in France. This Sauternes from Le Tertre du Lys d’Or also comes from this classic wine region. This region is one of the few areas in the world where conditions are optimal for making a sweet dessert wine.
Sauternes is located on the west bank of the Garonne River, southeast of Bordeaux. The Sémillon grape dominates this area, which is also what our Le Tertre du Lys d’Or Sauternes is made from. The Sémillon grape has a thin skin, making it susceptible to botrytis, or “noble rot.” This desired mold creates tiny holes in the ripe grapes, causing water to evaporate from the grapes and concentrating acids, flavors, and sugars.
This desired mold also imparts its typical aromas of apricot, dried fruit, honey, and citrus peel. This process can only occur under perfect conditions. First, the grapes must be fully ripened before this noble rot process takes place. You also need a region where misty mornings are followed by sunny, dry afternoons. This slows down the noble rot and allows the water to evaporate well from the grapes.
Making this wine requires a lot of time and effort. The spread of noble rot is never even. Different rounds of manual harvesting are always necessary. There are years when no botrytis wine can be made because the conditions are not favorable.
More about Le Tertre du Lys D’Or from De Luze winery
Sauternes Le Tertre du Lys d’Or is made by the De Luze winery. This winery was founded in 1822 by Baron Alfred de Luze and his son. Five years earlier, he and his brother had gone to New York to establish a wine business. To ensure a sufficient supply of Cognac to New York, he settled in Bordeaux.
The fact that these businesses thrived is evidenced by a cognac from 1848 currently available online. Georges Henri Alfred de Luze was originally from Germany and received the title of Baron from Louis III, Grand Duke of Hesse (Darmstadt). Baron Alfred de Luze was a pioneer in Bordeaux in the field of export.
