Tasting Notes Royal Oporto Ruby
In the glass, this ruby port displays a deep ruby red color with a youthful, bright sheen. On the nose, it opens expressively with aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, and red berries, followed by subtle hints of violets and a light spiciness. In the background, soft notes of cocoa and a touch of vanilla are discernible.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and round, with a clear but well-integrated sweetness. The juicy red fruit takes center stage and is supported by a fresh acidity that provides balance and vibrancy. The structure is smooth and accessible, without sharp edges, making it pleasantly drinkable. The finish is medium to long, fruity, and lightly spicy, with a warm, soft finale.
Drink this Port wine at a temperature of 15-18°C.
Wine & Food Pairing
This Royal Oporto Ruby pairs well with various cheeses: blue-veined cheeses, mature and rich cheeses, and creamy cheeses, or a chocolate dessert, due to the contrast between sweet and salty/umami.
Additional Information
There are two main types of port: ruby and tawny. Ruby ports are the most common and are recognizable by their ruby red color. They mature for a shorter time in wood. They are also bottled younger.
In 1857, Real Companhia Velha was founded by the Royal envoy of King Jose I. Douro, the region where Royal Oporto is made, is located in northern Portugal. Steep slopes along the river make this a unique place to grow grapes for Port. Royal Oporto Ruby is made from Tinta Francisca, Tinta Carvalha, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, and Tinto Cão grapes. The grapes mature for at least 3 years in wooden barrels.
