Tasting Notes Roger Champault Menetou-Salon
The aroma is expressive with lots of white fruit and grassiness. On the palate, this Loire wine is juicy, light, and friendly with relatively gentle acidity and a long finish. Easy-drinking, well-made Sauvignon Blanc. Always the younger sibling of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, but also always more attractively priced and often just as delicious! Pale yellow in color.
The Champault brothers produce pure Sauvignon wines with abundant fruit, fresh acidity, and striking minerality. The wines are perfectly balanced: neither vegetal nor overripe.
Wine & Food
Champault Menetou-Salon pairs well with fish dishes, shellfish, white and green asparagus, and of course, a (salad) with goat cheese.
Additional Information
In the shadow of the famous neighboring village of Sancerre lie the vineyards of Menetou-Salon. Just like in Sancerre, red, white, and rosé wines can be made in this wine village under the communal name Menetou-Salon.
However, white wine is ultimately the most produced and consumed in the wine village. According to regulations, a white wine from Menetou-Salon must always be made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc.
“No good wine without generations of experience and respect for nature,” is the vision of brothers Laurent and Claude Champault. Domaine Champault dates back to the 17th century, but wine was officially made only from 1850.
The phylloxera plague thwarted efforts and destroyed all vineyards. It took until the early 20th century before Louis Champault began replanting the 2 hectares of vineyards and gradually expanding the winery.
Today, the 5th generation, brothers Claude and Laurent, are at the helm. Together they manage the now 22-hectare estate in the hamlet of Champtin, just southwest of Sancerre. The vineyards are located in the Sancerre and Menetou-Salon appellations.
The soil consists of calcareous clay on steep slopes and a soil with a layer of brown sand with a large amount of chalk pebbles. The vineyards are cultivated as naturally as possible.
The grapevines are naturally protected against harmful insects and diseases. By planting other crops between the vines and treating the vines with natural fertilizers and pesticides, this unique terroir is preserved as much as possible.
