On the nose, this Remelluri Reserva has black fruit like blackcurrant and spices like cinnamon, herbaceous notes, and a hint of vanilla from the wood. On the palate, a soft entry and a silky texture. Again, beautiful fruit, elegant with wonderful acidity and disintegrating tannins. Long, mineral finish. Dark, slightly developed color.

Remelluri Reserva pairs well with hearty dishes such as grilled meat, game, beef stew, or pasta with wild mushrooms.

Other Information

The vineyards are among the highest in Rioja Alavesa. They are located on the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño mountains, south-facing, sheltered from the cold north wind. The stony soil with layers of clay, the rainfall from the Atlantic coast, and the lower-than-average temperatures in Rioja ensure good phenolic ripening of Tempranillo. Some of the vineyards are very old; also, in various vineyards, the grape varieties are traditionally planted together.

As early as the 14th century, monks made wine here from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately implemented drastic changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in Rioja at the time. The aim was also to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially organically certified under the leadership of Telmo.

Remelluri's wines put Rioja on the map in a beautiful, renewed way. Appreciation is great both within and outside Spain: the wines regularly win awards.
