Tasting note Philippe le Hardi Santenay Blanc
Clear golden yellow in color with aromas of citrus, ripe apple, white peach and acacia blossom. Subtle notes of toasted hazelnuts, vanilla and a refined minerality give the wine extra depth. The taste is rich and full, but thanks to the fresh acidity, it retains an elegant tension and a long, refined finish.
Storage potential
Delicious to drink now, but will develop further in the bottle for another 5 to 8 years under good conditions.
Wine & Food
Santenay Blanc by Philippe le Hardi pairs beautifully with lobster, scallops, grilled sea bass and turbot. Its elegant character also comes into its own with creamy risotto, poultry in a light cream sauce or ripe white mold cheeses. Thanks to its fresh acidity, it is also an excellent accompaniment to dishes with butter or citrus sauces.
Additional information
Château Philippe le Hardi forms the basis of today's Burgundy. With nearly 100 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte d'Or and the Côte Chalonnaise, the house offers a wide variety of white and red wines.
Château Philippe le Hardi is one of the largest wine estates in Burgundy. The imposing castle in Santenay dates back to the 9th century and was owned by Philippe le Hardi (Philip the Bold), Duke of Burgundy, for part of the 14th century. With his 'Ordonnance de Philippe le Hardi', he laid the foundation for single-varietal winemaking in Burgundy.
Château Philippe le Hardi owns 98 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte d'Or and the Côte Chalonnaise. In total, they make wine in 14 appellations, including Mercurey, Aloxe-Corton, Santenay, Pommard and Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. The estate's wines are loved for their elegance, finesse and complexity.
This widespread distribution across the region provides an enormous diversity of subclimates and soil compositions, and thus the opportunity to capture the different characters and styles of Burgundy in their wines.
Until mid-2021, the name of the estate was 'Château de Santenay'. Due to a change in Burgundy legislation in 2021, the name of the Santenay appellation is no longer permitted as an estate name. Therefore, the name has been changed to 'Château Philippe le Hardi'.
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in French oak barrels. The wine then matures for approximately 15 months, of which about 20% is in new oak barrels. This creates a beautiful balance between fresh fruit, creaminess and subtle wood tones.
Grape variety
Chardonnay
Fun fact
Santenay produces approximately 95% red wine. Only a small part of the appellation is planted with Chardonnay, making Santenay Blanc a relatively rare white Burgundy. This makes it an interesting choice for enthusiasts who want to discover something different than Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet.
