Château Philippe le Hardi forms the foundation of modern Burgundy. With nearly 100 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte d’Or and the Côte Chalonnaise, the estate offers a wide variety of white and red wines.

Château Philippe le Hardi is one of the largest wine estates in Burgundy. The imposing castle in Santenay dates back to the 9th century and was owned for part of the 14th century by Philippe le Hardi (Philip the Bold), Duke of Burgundy. With his ‘Ordonnance de Philippe le Hardi’, he laid the groundwork for monocépage viticulture in Burgundy, allowing only Pinot Noir to be planted for winemaking, and no longer Gamay.

Château Philippe le Hardi owns 98 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte d’Or and the Côte Chalonnaise. In total, they produce wine in 14 appellations, including Mercurey, Aloxe-Corton, Santenay, Pommard and Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Meursault. The estate's wines are loved for their elegance, finesse, and complexity.

This widespread distribution across the region provides an enormous diversity of sub-climates and soil compositions, and thus the opportunity to capture the different characters and styles of Burgundy in their wines.

Care for the environment and the preservation of healthy vineyards have been central to the estate's philosophy for over 20 years. The château has been Terra Vitis certified since 2004 and is constantly seeking new ways to work as naturally as possible.

Until mid-2021, the estate's name was ‘Château de Santenay’. Due to a change in Burgundy legislation in 2021, the name of the Santenay appellation is no longer permitted as an estate name. Therefore, the name was changed to ‘Château Philippe le Hardi’. The grapes come from the highly regarded En Vesveau vineyard. This results in a beautiful wine with a good balance between freshness and power.
