Tasting Note Esporão Monte Velho red 2021
The aroma offers a wealth of fruit, such as red berries, blackberries, and wild blueberries, but also hints of toast and tobacco due to oak aging. These flavors reappear on the palate, where the soft tannin structure is particularly pleasing. Clear ruby red color. All in all, this Esporão Monte Velho red is a very enjoyable wine.
Wine & Food
This full-bodied Esporão Monte Velho red calls for heartier dishes. Spiced lamb, grilled red meat, stews, or with a piece of aged Gouda cheese. Or try something different, as the local Portuguese do: octopus in red wine sauce or feijoada (a bean stew).
Further information
Monte Velho is the best-selling branded wine in Portugal. The Alentejo region is characterized by a summer of very hot days with strong cooling at night, followed by a winter that is extremely cold for Portugal. These ingredients, combined with volcanic soil and local grape varieties, form the basis of very original wines.
The history of the Esporão estate dates back to the Bronze Age. During the Roman occupation, the wines were already exported throughout the Roman Empire. Since then, the boundaries of the estate have remained largely unchanged. In 1985, Portugal's most modern winery was built, incorporating as many natural techniques as possible.
In 2002, a second winery was built specifically for the production of white wine. In addition to wine production, Esporão also specializes in the production of high-quality olive oil. For this, a completely new production facility was opened in 2016. Both in the vineyard and in the olive grove, Esporão operates entirely according to the rules of organic farming. Esporão is now one of the most important wine producers in Portugal and receives more than 50,000 visitors annually. Click here for more wines from this winery.
