The wine is a blend of no less than 13 different grape varieties permitted in Alsace, originating from different plots each with its own terroir.

Michel Deiss is a unique, idiosyncratic winemaker who produces exceptional wines. Biodynamics and terroir expression go hand in hand.

Domaine Marcel Deiss is among the best producers in Alsace. The house was founded in 1947, but the history of the Deiss family in winemaking goes back much further. The current owner and winemaker, Jean-Michel Deiss, very emphatically chooses a terroir philosophy.

“The vineyard comes before the grape variety” is his firm conviction. That is why he planted different grape varieties together in various vineyards (complantation), as winemakers used to do. This promotes biodiversity in the vineyard: the different grape varieties strengthen and support each other. Other local crops, trees and shrubs in and around the vineyards ensure even greater biodiversity.

As much work as possible is done manually in the vineyards and according to biodynamic principles. Vertical root growth is stimulated as much as possible: the deeper the roots go into the soil, the more nutrients and characteristic properties of the vineyard the grapevines can absorb.
