Tasting Note Kleine Oranjerie Terrarium Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
An elegant and surprisingly complex white wine from South Africa, made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The aroma combines citrus, lemongrass, and white flowers with riper notes of tropical fruit, honeydew melon, and a hint of hay and fennel.
On the palate, the wine is beautifully balanced. The Sauvignon Blanc provides vibrant freshness and citrus, while the Semillon contributes more body, softness, and a lightly creamy texture. Notes of grapefruit, lime, and passionfruit come together with a subtle honeyed and spicy undertone. The finish is fresh, clean, and elegant.
Wine & Food
A versatile wine that pairs excellently with Thai green curry, roasted chicken, spicy mango salad, sushi, seafood, and light Asian dishes. It also makes a great aperitif, precisely because it has more structure than an average crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
Additional Information
The Terrarium is a South African interpretation of the classic combination of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, known from Bordeaux. The grapes come from vineyards in Franschhoek and the Coastal Region of the Western Cape. The result is deliberately different from a lean, crisp Sauvignon: the wine has more texture, ripe fruit, and complexity.
The Semillon from Franschhoek is fermented in large 600-liter French and Austrian oak barrels and then aged for about 10 months in barrel. The Sauvignon Blanc is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and also remains on the lees for about 10 months. Only then are both components blended. The final blend then rests for about six weeks in tank before being filtered and bottled.
This beautifully explains why this wine has both freshness and creaminess and structure. The Sauvignon Blanc provides tension; the Semillon and oak aging give the wine more depth.

Fun Fact
Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc together form a classic white Bordeaux blend. In the Terrarium, however, these two grapes have a very different effect: the South African origin and the different vinification methods create a wine that is simultaneously fresh, creamy, and aromatic.
