Tasting Notes Jordan Assyrtiko
The Jordan Assyrtiko is a fresh, elegant white wine from South Africa with a distinct and mineral character. The aroma reveals notes of citrus, lime, green apple, and subtle floral undertones. The taste is lively and crisp, with fresh acidity, ripe white fruit, and a beautiful mineral tension. The wine has a dry, refreshing finish while remaining pleasantly rounded and approachable.
Wine & Food Pairing
Jordan Assyrtiko is an excellent accompaniment to shellfish, sushi, ceviche, grilled fish, and light salads. It is also delicious with goat cheese dishes or as an aperitif. Thanks to its fresh acidity, this wine also pairs well with spicier Asian dishes.
Additional Information
Assyrtiko originally comes from the Greek island of Santorini. Jordan has planted this Mediterranean grape in South Africa and given it its own interpretation. The warm South African climate is combined here with Assyrtiko's naturally high acidity. The result is a wine with great freshness, minerality, and a clear Mediterranean character.
The grapes are carefully harvested relatively early to preserve their natural acidity and freshness. The wine is then fermented in stainless steel tanks, ensuring that the pure fruit and fresh style of the grape remain central.
The Jordan winery is the only winery in Stellenbosch that owns vineyards planted in every compass direction. They own no less than 164 hectares in this beautiful wine region. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 160 to 410 meters and benefit from the cooling influences of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The soil consists of ancient granite with various top layers, ranging from clay-loam to sand and gravel. Innovative methods are combined with a natural approach in winemaking.
Fun fact
Assyrtiko is a true sun worshipper. The grape originates from the volcanic island of Santorini, where it has adapted to extremely sunny and dry conditions. Despite the heat, Assyrtiko remarkably retains a lot of acidity. That's precisely why it's so interesting to taste how the same grape behaves in the much greener and cooler wine region of Stellenbosch.
