Tasting Note Franz Keller Spätburgunder vom Löss
An elegant and juicy German Spätburgunder with aromas of cherries, red and dark fruit, complemented by subtle spicy and earthy notes. On the palate fresh and lively, with fine tannins, a beautiful structure, and a slight minerality. The oak influence remains modest and supports the fruit. An accessible Pinot Noir with the typical finesse of the Kaiserstuhl.
Wine & Food
Delicious with poultry, veal, pork, mushrooms, and pasta. Also very good with roast chicken with herbs or a creamy mushroom risotto. The fresh acidity also makes it surprisingly versatile at the table.
Additional information
The Spätburgunder vom Löss comes from the Kaiserstuhl in Baden, one of Germany's warmest and sunniest wine regions. Franz Keller's vineyards are located on soils where loess covers the volcanic subsoil. This combination provides excellent conditions for Burgundian grape varieties such as Spätburgunder and Chardonnay.
The wine is a VDP.Gutswein and thus offers a nice introduction to Franz Keller's Spätburgunder wines. Although it is at the lower end of the VDP classification, "simple" here is absolutely not the same as simplistic: the wine already clearly shows the house style, with freshness, fruit, and finesse.
The wine is made with some of the best fruit from their own vineyards and is aged in used wood. This keeps the fruit central and at the same time gives the wine extra depth and structure.
Franz Keller - Schwarzer Adler is a gastronomic institution in the Kaiserstuhl, in Baden, and even throughout Germany. There is a winery, a wine import and trade business, a hotel, and three restaurants. One of these restaurants, Schwarzer Adler, has continuously held a Michelin star since 1969, longer than any other restaurant in Germany.

Fun fact
Loess is actually wind-deposited rock. During the last ice ages, fine dust was carried by the wind and eventually deposited. In many places in the Kaiserstuhl, such a fertile loess layer lies on top of the volcanic rock. At Franz Keller, precisely this combination forms an important part of the character of the wines.
