Tasting Note Franz Keller Grauburgunder vom Löss
A fresh and elegant Grauburgunder with aromas of apple, pear, and ripe peach, complemented by citrus and a subtle mineral and earthy touch. On the palate, it is beautifully dry and juicy, with a soft structure, fresh acidity, and a refined finish. A characterful German Pinot Gris that beautifully combines fruit and freshness with the typical minerality of the Kaiserstuhl.
Wine & Food
Excellent with fish, shellfish, poultry, pork, and mushrooms. Also delicious with creamy risotto, pan-fried fish, or a salad with smoked chicken. The wine has enough structure to handle richer dishes as well.
Further information
The Grauburgunder vom Löss comes from the Kaiserstuhl in Baden, one of Germany's warmest and sunniest wine regions. The name "vom Löss" refers to the loess soils that lie atop the volcanic rock in large parts of the Kaiserstuhl.
Franz Keller has a clear preference for the Burgundian grape varieties that thrive in the Kaiserstuhl. Grauburgunder is a prime example of this. The combination of the warm climate, volcanic subsoil, and loess results in wines with ripe fruit, structure, and at the same time sufficient freshness.
The Grauburgunder vom Löss falls within the VDP Gutswein classification, making it an excellent introduction to the style of Weingut Franz Keller. A step higher within the assortment, for example, is the Oberbergener Bassgeige Grauburgunder VDP.Erste Lage.
Franz Keller - Schwarzer Adler is a gastronomic institution in the Kaiserstuhl, in Baden, and indeed throughout Germany. There is a winery, a wine import and trade business, a hotel, and three restaurants. One of these restaurants, Schwarzer Adler, has continuously held a Michelin star since 1969, the longest of all restaurants in Germany.

Fun fact
Grauburgunder is the same grape as Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio. The difference is not in the grape itself, but mainly in the wine style and origin. In Germany, the grape is called Grauburgunder and can often be made fuller and more powerful than the fresh, light style many know as Pinot Grigio. And at Franz Keller, thanks to the loess on top of the volcanic rock of the Kaiserstuhl, it gets a very unique character.
