Tasting Notes Esporão Monte Velho Reserva Red
In the glass, you see a bright ruby red color; young yet expressive. The nose unfolds intense notes of wild berries, black plum, raspberry, and red currant, along with sweet spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg and a subtle toast from the oak aging. On the palate, the wine is full and rich, with black fruit gently rounded off by jammy hints. The structure is firm yet supple, with round tannins and fine acidity, finishing in a long, lingering aftertaste.
Wine & Food
Esporão Monte Velho Reserva Red pairs excellently with powerful dishes: grilled lamb, a beef or game stew, barbecue dishes, or an aged white cheese like Goudse with character.
Other information
In the heart of subtropical sunny Alentejo in the south of Portugal is the iconic winery Herdade do Esporão, which stands for sustainable quality and accessible elegance. The Monte Velho Reserva Red is the more luxurious sibling of the popular Monte Velho Red: more refined thanks to barrique influences, without losing the freshness and charm of its entry-level version.
The Alentejo region is characterized by a summer of very hot days with a strong cooling at night followed by a winter that is extremely cold for Portugal. These ingredients combined with volcanic soil and local grape varieties are the basis of very original wines. The history of the Esporão winery dates back to the Bronze Age. During the Roman occupation, the wines were already exported throughout the Roman Empire.
The grapes are machine-harvested and immediately destemmed and crushed. After controlled fermentation, malolactic conversion and aging for 8 months in oak (American and/or French) follow, then further bottle aging before the wine is released to the market.
