Monte Velho is the best-selling branded wine in Portugal. The Alentejo region is characterized by a summer of very hot days with a sharp cooling at night, followed by a winter that is extremely cold for Portugal. These ingredients, combined with volcanic soil and local grape varieties, form the basis of very original wines.

The history of the Esporão estate dates back to the Bronze Age. During the Roman occupation, the wines were already exported throughout the Roman Empire. From that time on, the boundaries of the estate have remained virtually unchanged. In 1985, Portugal's most modern winery was built, focusing as much as possible on natural techniques.

In 2002, a second winery was built specifically for white wine production. In addition to wine production, Esporão also specializes in the production of high-quality olive oil. For this, a completely new production facility was opened in 2016. In both the vineyard and the olive grove, Esporão operates fully according to the rules of organic farming. Esporão is now one of the most important wine producers in Portugal and receives more than 50,000 visitors per year.
