Tasting note Costanti Brunello di Montalcino
First, the nose offers a wealth of ripe fruit (Amarena cherries, sweet blueberries) alongside complex aromas of oak influence (vanilla, clove, toast) and luscious aromas (caramel, coffee), with notes of tobacco, leather, and 'game' also discernible. These complex aromas are also found on the palate, supported by a ripe structure with great concentration. Beautiful acidity and ripe tannins form the building blocks that guarantee this wine a long future. This Costanti Brunello di Montalcino is a classic Brunello from a top producer. In the glass, it has a deep ruby red color with an orange-brown rim.
Wine & Food
This powerful Costanti Brunello di Montalcino pairs well with various game dishes and roasted meats, such as lamb chops with a herb crust or a roasted lamb roll, and of course grilled red meat dishes, like a grilled bavette or a juicy grilled rib-eye with a red wine sauce. Additionally, due to its acidity, this wine is excellent with tomato-based dishes. It's no surprise that this top wine from Italy is one with Italian cuisine.
Further information
The noble Costanti family is one of the oldest families in Montalcino. The current Count, Andrea, is a geologist and has been at the helm of the winery since 1983. He understands his craft: the small estate is highly praised by connoisseurs. The winery is located two kilometers east of Montalcino, and the soil is the famous Tuscan Galestro. The vineyards for Brunello are high: between 330 and 440 meters. In the 1990s, the highest vineyards were considered the absolute limit for ripening Sangiovese, but with climate change, this view is changing. Costanti now benefits from this altitude: the wines are fresher and more delicate than average.
Andrea believes in a special aging system. After fermentation in stainless steel for 14 to 21 days, all wine goes into 500-liter barrels, of which a maximum of 20% are new. After one year, the Rosso is bottled. The rest continues to age in Slovenian oak barrels averaging 3,000 liters. After another year, it is decided what the special Rosso (Vermiglio) will be made from, and that is then bottled. The rest continues to age for another year as Brunello. After these three years of aging, it is determined whether a Riserva will be made, and if so, which barrels qualify. These are the ones with the highest acidity and firmest tannins, suitable for long bottle aging. Vintage 2017 is now drinkable and can be cellared until 2040.
