Tasting Notes Château Soucherie Coteaux du Layon Patrimoine
This clear and wonderfully fresh, slightly sweet wine from Coteaux du Layon has a fresh nose with citrus fruit and some riper fruit like lychee. Château Soucherie Coteaux du Layon Patrimoine is fresh and aromatic on the nose, with notes of citrus, hazelnut, and almond and a striking minerality. On the palate, the wine is complex and layered, with concentrated fruit aromas, mineral notes, and vibrant acidity. Light golden yellow in color with a grey sheen.
Wine & Food Pairing
This wine enhances and refines the flavor of dishes with foie gras, such as brioche with duck and goose liver, fig compote, and aged balsamic vinegar. This Château Soucherie Coteaux du Layon Patrimoine is also exceptionally suitable as a dessert wine.
Additional Information
The climate in the Layon Valley is perfectly suited for the development of botrytis cinerea (noble rot). The cool, humid nights, morning dew and fog, interspersed with warm, sunny afternoons, ensure controlled growth of these fungi. This results in beautiful (slightly) sweet wines with a unique, complex character.
After manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, after which the juice is fermented in 500-liter oak barrels. A 9-month aging on lees rounds out the wine and gives it refinement. The grapes are harvested at different times, with only perfectly ripe grapes being selected. After a gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation occurs with the help of natural yeasts, after which the wine ages for another 12 months in oak barrels.
The result is a soft, slightly sweet wine with a beautiful balance between ripeness, sugars, and fresh acidity. On the nose, aromas of juicy citrus fruit and some riper fruit, like lychee. Pleasantly round and slightly sweet on the palate with vibrant acidity. The wine is thirst-quenching (well chilled) and delicious as an aperitif.
The impressive Château Soucherie owns 28 hectares of vineyards planted with Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. These are used to make Anjou Blanc, Rouge, and Villages Rouge. Additionally, the estate has vineyards in Coteaux du Layon (including the premier cru Chaume) and in Savennières (Clos de Perrières). Currently, the château is in conversion to full organic viticulture, for which the estate will receive official certification in 2022.
The Château is located outside the village of Beaulieu sur Layon, beautifully situated among the vineyards. The estate not only produces wine but also offers bed and breakfast rooms, gîtes, and facilities for large meetings. So, if you ever travel in the Loire, a visit to Château Soucherie is highly recommended!
