Tasting Note Castel Firmian Riserva Pinot Grigio
A complex aroma of ripe fruit (pear and white peach), chamomile, and oak. The palate is spicy, full, and ripe. The influences of the oak and ripe fruit are well-balanced. A very complete wine, where one flavor sensation leads to the next. Fruit, acidity, oak, body: this wine has the balance of a tightrope walker. Beautiful golden yellow color.
Food Pairing
This Castel Firmian Pinot Grigio Riserva pairs well with antipasti, fish, and white meat dishes. Additionally, this Pinot Grigio combines wonderfully with polenta, gratinated dishes, fish, and white meat. Or, in the Italian style, with tagliatelle ai funghi porcini.
Other information
The climate of the region has both alpine and Mediterranean influences. Due to differences in altitude and position relative to the sun, conditions vary greatly per vineyard, but as a rule, the grapes undergo slow ripening. Thanks in part to the cool nights, they retain many of their aromas and a lively acidity. The white wines mostly come from the high-altitude vineyards and the red ones, depending on the grapes from which they are made, from the warmer valleys. In the nose, one finds typical Pinot Grigio characteristics such as pear, melon, blossom, and especially chamomile. The 8 months of aging in oak give the wine finesse and length.
Castel Firmian Pinot Grigio Riserva is made from 100% Pinot Grigio grapes and has been aged for approximately 8 months in oak barrels. This is one of Mezzacorona's two showpieces, just like the Teroldego Riserva (red). Both are produced exclusively in limited quantities and only in the best years. Can easily be aged for a few more years.
Mezzacorona was one of the first cooperatives in Italy and now represents a large group of wine companies from the far north (Trentino) to the deep south (Sicily). The vineyards of winemaker Mezzocorona are located in Trentino and Alto Adige, the region between Verona and the Alps in Italy.

Fun fact
The Castel Firmian Pinot Grigio Riserva comes from a very specific vineyard area called Zablani/Zambiani, just northeast of Mezzacorona. The soil here is alluvial and well-drained and strongly resembles the adjacent classic Teroldego soils. This particular location is used for the Riserva; furthermore, the grapes are harvested by hand and selected for the Riserva only in the best years.
