Tasting Notes BIO Marcel Deiss Schoenenbourg Grand Cru
The Schoenenbourg Grand Cru belongs to the absolute elite of Alsace and is considered one of Domaine Marcel Deiss's most impressive terroir wines. The wine opens with a complex and refined bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, white peach, apricot, and candied orange peel, interwoven with aromas of flint, wet stone, honey, and subtle smoky nuances.
As the wine opens up, notes of herbs, blossoms, and a slight salinity also emerge. On the palate, the Schoenenbourg shows itself to be powerful and concentrated, yet at the same time refined and perfectly balanced. The combination of ripe fruit, lively acidity, and impressive minerality creates a wine with enormous tension and depth. The finish is exceptionally long and complex, with the various layers continuing to develop for a long time.
Wine & Food
This exceptional Grand Cru is an ideal companion for gastronomic dishes such as turbot, lobster, langoustines, and scallops. Its versatility also shines with rich fish dishes with beurre blanc, poultry in creamy sauces, veal, and refined Asian preparations. Thanks to its complexity and minerality, it also forms a magnificent combination with truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses.
Additional Information
The Schoenenbourg Grand Cru comes from one of the most legendary vineyards in Alsace, located near the historic village of Riquewihr. This Grand Cru has enjoyed an exceptional reputation since the Middle Ages and has been considered one of the best terroirs in the region by many generations. The unique soil consists of a complex mix of clay, marl, gypsum, and dolomite, which gives the wine its characteristic power, minerality, and enormous aging potential. Thanks to its excellent location on sunny slopes, the grapes achieve optimal ripeness, while the subsoil provides freshness and structure.
Domaine Marcel Deiss is one of the most influential wineries in France and is known worldwide for its uncompromising focus on terroir. Under the leadership of Jean-Michel Deiss, they work according to the philosophy that the vineyard is more important than the grape variety. Therefore, the different grape varieties within the vineyard are planted, harvested, and fermented together according to the principle of complantation. The result is a wine that does not reflect a single grape but the unique character of the vineyard itself.
All the domain's vineyards are cultivated biodynamically, with great attention to biodiversity, natural balance, and healthy soil life. The grapes are exclusively hand-harvested and carefully selected. After a slow pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts follows. Subsequently, the wine matures for a longer period on its fine lees in traditional large wooden foudres, creating extra complexity, texture, and depth without losing the pure terroir character.
In short; An iconic Grand Cru that embodies the essence of Alsace: monumental, mineral, and impressively complex, with aging potential reserved only for the greatest white wines in the world.
