Tasting note BIO Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc
The Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc smells of fresh melon, tropical pineapple, tangy lime and a hint of delicate honey. These aromas once again prove what Chenin Blanc has to offer. On the palate, fresh fruit of gooseberry, pear, and peach come through, in excellent harmony with the full minerality.
Wine & Food Pairing
Avondale Anima Chenin Blanc is the perfect combination with veal, quail in orange sauce, or sweet and spicy dishes from Asian cuisine.
Other information
Avondale is one of the oldest wineries in Paarl. Winemaker Jonathan Grieve makes wines using natural ecosystems. The water from the Drakenstein mountain waterfalls flows down over the vineyards and the ancient riverbed, around and over which the winery and cellars are built. In the hot summer sun, this water provides natural cooling for the grapes.
The word Anima refers to soul and vital life force. Avondale believes that the soul breathes life into all things. This wine, at least, was made with heart and soul. Moreover, this Anima wine contains many minerals that have "animated" the taste of the wine. The Chenin Blanc vines from which the grapes originate are between 11 and 38 years old. Yields are deliberately kept low (through so-called green harvesting) to achieve a high concentration in the wine.
The grapes were hand-picked. The whole bunches were naturally fermented in 500-liter wooden barrels. No factory yeasts were added to facilitate this process. 15-20% of the harvest was fermented in stone amphorae. Afterwards, the wine aged on its lees for a year with regular stirring. The wine is ready to drink approximately 4 years after harvest and can be enjoyed up to 10 years after harvest, provided it is stored under the correct conditions.
