Tasting Notes Bergsig Estate Patmos Reserve Chenin Blanc
Rich in aromas such as dried apricots, ripe citrus, and a hint of wood. Exciting dry Chenin Blanc with the potential to age beautifully. The wine is complex. Elegant with fine acidity. But also full-bodied and creamy.
Wine & Food Pairing
A superb food wine! It can handle quite a bit. Chicken with peaches, quail with apricots, a spicy couscous, grilled fish, Coquilles Saint Jacques, roasted pork, Oriental salads, or dishes with a creamy sauce.
Additional Information
The name Bergsig refers to the view of the Drakensberg mountains, but more important for the vineyard's soil composition is its location near the Breede River. Over time, this river has created a wide variety of soil types, which allows for an equally varied planting of both white and red grapes.
This Bergsig Chenin Blanc Reserve owes its name to the sailing ship Padmos (Patmos), built in Rotterdam in 1722. Captain Willem de Wijs's ship sailed to and from South Africa 9 times before it sank in Smalle Baai. On one of its voyages, the ship departed from Texel with Johann Herman Lategan, one of the ancestors of the current successful winemaker De Wet Lategan, on board. A model of the ship is on display in the Maritime Museum of Rotterdam.
