Tasting Notes Bergsig Estate Barrel Fermented Chardonnay
Bergsig Estate Chardonnay has a fresh lemon, lime aroma with supportive smoky notes from the wood aging. The taste is soft and creamy with nuances of freshly baked bread and butterscotch, vanilla and toasted nuts. A very nice, clean, complex and elegant wine in a Burgundy style. A beautiful (lighter) alternative to the heavy Chardonnays from America, for example. Dark yellow color.
Wine & Food Pairing
Delicious with various fish dishes, shellfish, white meat, poultry, and seafood risotto.
Other information
The name Bergsig (mountain view) refers to the view of the Drakensberg mountains; if you walk up through the vineyards, you have a breathtaking view of the entire area. The surroundings are impressive and even fairytale-like. Because the Breede River influences the vineyards, the soil composition is perfect for growing first-class top grapes for both white and red.
After pressing, this Bergsig Chardonnay Barrel Fermented undergoes wood aging for approximately six months. 300-liter barrels, partly new, are used.
Over the years, the baton has been passed on to the next generation, and today the seventh generation is at the helm. The estate has been in the hands of the Lategan family for generations and is currently led by winemaker De Wet Lategan. That this winemaker from South Africa is exceptionally talented is evident from the results at wine competitions; his wines are regularly awarded gold or silver.
