Tasting note Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo Claré JC
A fresh, elegant, and highly aromatic Nebbiolo with a light-footed character. The nose reveals cherries, raspberries, roses, and orange zest, complemented by fresh herbal notes. On the palate, the wine is juicy and lively, with plenty of red fruit, fresh acidity, and soft tannins. A subtle, light sparkling touch gives the wine extra energy and makes it exceptionally drinkable.
Food Pairing
Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo Claré is delicious with pizza, pasta, antipasti, charcuterie, grilled chicken, and light meat dishes. Due to its fresh and juicy character, it is also surprisingly good with spicy dishes.
Feel free to serve it slightly cooler than a classic red wine. It is precisely that fresh character that makes the Claré J.C. so appealing.
Additional information
The Claré J.C. is made from grapes harvested from young Nebbiolo vines. The winery G.D. Vajra consciously opts for early bottling to preserve the fresh, fruity, and lively character of the young wine. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and undergoes a relatively gentle extraction, resulting in tannins that are much more refined than those in a classic Barolo.
A portion of the grapes is processed as whole clusters. This contributes to the light structure and fresh character of the wine. Furthermore, the wine is bottled young, which preserves the vibrant fruit and energy of the Nebbiolo.
What makes this wine truly special is the historical method of winemaking. G.D. Vajra based the process on old descriptions from 1606 by Gian Battista Croce, a jeweler at the court of Savoy. Historical sources show that in those days, Nebbiolo was drunk much lighter, fresher, and sometimes even slightly sparkling and sweet compared to the powerful, tannic Nebbiolo wines we know today.
As a result, the Claré J.C. is actually a very unique historical interpretation of Nebbiolo: not intended as a "little Barolo," but as a wine that demonstrates that this grape once had a much lighter and more playful side.
Claré J.C. refers to two individuals who were important to the story behind this wine:
- J = Thomas Jefferson, who visited Piedmont in 1787 and described Nebbiolo as a wine that was, among other things, fresh and lively.
- C = Darrell Corti, an American wine pioneer who helped bring the historical, slightly sparkling, and slightly sweet style of Nebbiolo back to attention.
- Claré refers to the historical claret-like style in which Nebbiolo used to be made.

Fun fact
With the Claré J.C., G.D. Vajra aims to let you taste what Nebbiolo might have been like centuries ago. The wine is based on a vinification method from 1606 and is deliberately made light, fresh, and even a little effervescent. It is essentially a kind of Nebbiolo from a time machine.
