The taste is harmonious, with a fresh attack, a beautiful structure, and a fine balance between acidity and ripe notes. The wine has a relatively light alcohol influence.

This wine has a delicate style, partly due to the soils formed during the eruption of two nearby volcanoes. The color is golden yellow. In short: a refined, mineral Chardonnay with good aging potential.

Wine & Food

Volcanes Tectonia Chardonnay is an ultimate food wine and goes well with salmon tartare, lobster, fresh shellfish, ripe cheeses, pasta with cream sauce, white meat, poultry, crab, risotto, salmon and sea bass.

Additional information

The soils of Malleco Valley were formed during (relatively recent) volcanic eruptions and thus consist of effusive lava and especially volcanic ash. This Volcanes Tectonia Chardonnay has matured for 11 months in barrels of 10% new, 40% 1-year-old, and 50% 2-year-old French oak.

Bodega Volcanes is a project that started in 2009 and is part of the Grupo Vinos del Pacifico (GVP). Several employees of this group came up with the idea to create a series of wines from vineyards with 100% volcanic soils.

The five-person team includes winemaker María del Pilar Díaz, geologist Gonzalo Hendriguez, and Terroir manager Agustín Aguerrea. They have selected three vineyards, spread throughout Chile, which they believe convey the ultimate expression of volcanic soil to the wines.

In Rapel Valley, this is a vineyard with silt, clay, and loam soils supplemented with coarser material such as Andesite stones (an effusive rock). In Maule Valley, they have found a vineyard with a soil of (weathered) granite. In Malleco Valley, the vineyard is planted on a soil of so-called "Tolhuaco," which consists of volcanic ash.

María Díaz strives to express the purity and minerality of the soils in the wines. This is very successful, especially since fermentation and maturation never involve excessive use of (new) wood. The wines are all lively and rich and have more complexity in aroma and taste than comparable wines from the same region.

Awards/distinctions

The Volcanes Tectonia Chardonnay is one of the finest Chilean Chardonnays and has rightly received 91/100 points from James Suckling.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1078/1183/2133/files/36371b0c4daeea428fa50d40f9b09b4957eeb1d5.jpg?v=1787299602
