Aromatic, spicy yet round, medium-bodied with a charming velvety finish. The Chardonnay comes from the Oberbergener Bassgeige vineyard (from the Kaiserstuhl area), which is very well-known far beyond Baden. The name was derived from the characteristic shape of the vineyards around the village.

Franz Keller - Schwarzer Adler is a culinary institution in the Kaiserstuhl, in Baden, and indeed throughout Germany. There is a wine estate, a wine import and trade business, a hotel, and three restaurants. One of these restaurants, Schwarzer Adler, has continuously held a Michelin star since 1969, the longest of any restaurant in Germany.

The company is now in the hands of Fritz Keller, a man with boundless energy and many ideas. His son Friedrich is particularly involved in winemaking. Most importantly for us, of course, is that the wines produced are of impeccable quality and are therefore highly appreciated in Germany and far beyond, with ratings up to 94 points from Parker.

The wines have never been subject to 'taste trends' but have always prioritized terroir. The Kaiserstuhl has volcanic soil with high loess deposits, ideal for what they call Burgundersorten in Germany, such as Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, and Spätburgunder. Good news in 2019: Keller was named "Winzer des Jahres" (Winemaker of the Year) by Gault & Millau.

Discover more wines from the Franz Keller winery

Fun Fact

The Chardonnay vines of the Oberbergener Bassgeige come from Burgundian clones. Franz Keller deliberately uses these clones to produce a German Chardonnay with the power and finesse you also know from Burgundy, thus with the unique character of the Kaiserstuhl. The wine also undergoes oak aging, which makes it beautifully round and complex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1078/1183/2133/files/aa57cab1dbc0939f1b5a32833eb9dabcec41012e.jpg?v=1787299472
