The taste, in particular, will leave a lasting impression: soft, full, and sweet dark fruit, such as blackberries, cherries, and licorice. On the palate, it is very soft, with many deep flavors of black fruit, along with toffee, vanilla, and plums. It has a soft and warm finish. The color of the Susumaniello is purplish-red.

Wine & Food Pairing

Pair this powerful Velarino Salento Susumaniello with antipasti, game and meat dishes, and aged cheeses.

Additional Information

The Velarino vineyards are located in the south of Italy, specifically in Apulia, in Salento. This region is particularly known for its wide beaches and crystal-clear sea. The vineyard is quite old and today yields a top harvest of the local Susumaniello grape. This grape has made a complete comeback because a group of innovative winemakers gave the grape a new chance about 10 years ago, and with success. A grape that thrives perfectly in the warm climate of Salento.

The vineyards receive plenty of sunshine, allowing the harvest to ripen easily. A very pleasant side effect is that there is always a fresh breeze from the sea. This provides refreshment to the harvest, allowing the Susumaniello grape to grow evenly and, above all, calmly.

The soil in which the vines grow is a treasure trove for the grape cluster. Wine has been cultivated on these lands for hundreds of years, and we taste that in this powerful red wine. When the harvest is ripe, Velarino's winemaker hand-picks the grapes. Only the best grapes are selected and transported to Velarino's cellars. Upon arrival, the grapes are destemmed and immediately pressed. The juice is stirred regularly to gain more color and power. After this, the entire wine matures for no less than ten months in Velarino's cellars. The Susumaniello is given all the rest it needs to develop, and we taste that as well.

The name 'Puglia' is derived from the Roman 'a-pluvia,' meaning lack of rain. The vineyards are located on flat terrain where they are tormented by the hot sun.

This beautiful classic red wine from Italy owes its name to the theater.
